Black pride is the feeling of self-respect and accomplishment that a person feels when they are identified with their race or ethnicity. It can be positive or negative, but it is always important to identify and express your black pride! There are many ways to show your black pride, and you can do it in any way that works best for you. Some people choose to wear traditional African clothing or accessories, while others may display their pride through music, art, or activism. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority?s history of activism
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is one of the first black Greek-letter organizations in the United States. Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded on December 4, 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. by five black students who sought to promote sisterhood and create opportunities for women of color.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority?s history of activism includes work on behalf of civil rights, education and economic justice issues. The sorority has been a driving force behind many progressive social movements including desegregation, gender equity and voter registration drives. In 1965, Alpha Kappa Alpha became one of the first African American organizations to nationalize when it joined the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). NPHC is a network of more than 200 predominantly black fraternities and sororities.
In recent years, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has focused on amplifying the voices and experiences of young women of color through its Project HEAL initiative which seeks to address health disparities affecting low-income communities of color. Through Project HEAL, members have partnered with community organizations to develop comprehensive health plans thataddress access to quality care, healthy food options, mental health services and trauma-informed programming for youth
