Exploring the Enchanting Island of Capri: A Filming Adventure

As I journeyed across the vibrant Tyrrhenian Sea from Naples, the enchanting island of Capri emerged on the horizon—a place steeped in magic and charm. Its towering limestone cliffs are adorned with colorful bougainvillea and fragrant lemon trees, making it a haven for artists and celebrities alike. Iconic figures such as Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, and Jackie Kennedy have been captivated by the island’s stunning vistas, perfect climate, and the idyllic dolce vita lifestyle. It was a destination I longed to explore.

When my friend, filmmaker Paul Feig, announced he would be shooting the sequel to his hit film, A Simple Favor, on Capri, I seized the opportunity. Eager to be part of the scene, I fluffed my hair and struck poses to channel my inner star, hoping to convey that I was ready for my cinematic moment.

With Paul’s invitation to visit the set, I quickly donned my stylish Capri pants and oversized sunglasses, ready to embrace the island’s allure.

Why was I so excited? Paul is my favorite director, known for his comedic brilliance and empowering narratives featuring strong female characters. His films—like Bridesmaids and Spy—showcase women taking the lead. Being part of one of his projects would be a thrilling experience. My plan was to hang around and hopefully sneak into a scene.

Capri restricts non-residential vehicles for most of the year, so upon disembarking the ferry at the bustling Marina, I hopped into a charming pink taxi that took me to the medieval town. The island consists of three areas: the lively port of Marina Grande, the glamorous main town of Capri, filled with elegant shops and stylish visitors, and the peaceful higher town of Anacapri.

I chose the beautifully elegant Hotel La Palma as my base, the oldest hotel on the island, established in 1822. It is nestled among boutique shops on Via Vittorio Emanuele and just steps from the Piazzetta, the island’s bustling main square. Recently refurbished, the hotel gleamed with light-filled spaces accented in soothing colors. Though I would have loved to linger, I had my own adventure to chase.

After an energizing espresso at the Piazzetta, I navigated the intricate alleyways, weaving through chic shoppers oblivious to the film production happening around them.

Once I spotted Paul and his talented cast on Via Camerelle, the most glamorous street on the island, I transitioned from a hurried run to a subtle strut. The vast crew, clad in black, filled the street with their equipment, contrasting sharply with the charming backdrop of flower boxes and chic bars. Amidst the bustling scene, Paul, dressed sharply with his iconic hat, oversaw the action.

I settled at an outdoor table of the Aurora restaurant, attempting to catch Paul’s eye while watching Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick enact a dramatic scene, skillfully navigating through the picturesque cobblestone alleys. Despite my best efforts to attract attention, the camera never turned my way.

Determined, I spent the day chasing Paul around the island, darting through narrow, winding paths, past the ancient Villa Jovis of Emperor Tiberius and the captivating Gardens of Augustus, pausing only to admire breathtaking views of the Faraglioni, three majestic limestone formations rising from the sea.

Just as I reached the Marina Grande port, news spread that the crew had relocated to Anacapri. After reapplying my lip gloss, I climbed the 921 steps of the Scala Fenicia back to the summit.

After admiring the exquisite baroque mosaics at the Church of St. Michael, I took a cable car to Monte Solaro for panoramic views. Although I could see the distant Vesuvius, there was still no sign of Paul.

When rumors surfaced that the cast might be boarding boats, I quickly rented a sleek Riva speedboat to chase after them along the rugged coastline. For hours, I felt like a movie star as we cruised into emerald coves and ventured through shimmering sea caves. Dressed in a white bikini, I took a plunge into the mesmerizing Blue Grotto, a site steeped in legend, making it the perfect backdrop for my starry aspirations.

As afternoon turned to evening, I treated myself to a refreshing aperitif in the main square, overlooking the delightful sea of stylish visitors passing through the Piazzetta. Enjoying an Aperol spritz, I felt strikingly camera-ready yet still went unnoticed.

A flurry of activity caused by Lively’s vibrant hat sent me rushing toward the clock tower, but in my haste, I stumbled, causing my phone to inadvertently start recording. I ended up with footage—of my foot.

When I finally regained my footing and moved into view, it became clear that I had missed my moment as the camera shot past. Disheartened, I wandered into the Grand Hotel Quisisana, only to discover Paul filming in their lobby. I positioned myself in view until he announced, “It’s a wrap.” When I approached him, it became evident that his true love for film began not with actors but with bonds forged over European travels with his wife, Laurie, who he married in 1994.

I asked him about the importance of choosing a location compared to casting actors. “It’s equally important,” he replied. “Capri serves as a natural film set. Another Simple Favor presents a contrast of suburban noir, where unsettling events unfold in brilliant daylight, creating a sense of threat amid beauty.”

After all, direct sunlight can feel daunting as one ages. He chuckled, sipping his martini. “I like a contrasting backdrop. I want the beauty of the location to counteract darker themes in the narrative. There’s truly no place more breathtaking than Capri.”

In the end, while I may have struggled for the spotlight, the true star of the production was undoubtedly Capri itself. After my attempts to catch Paul’s eye, I set aside my filming aspirations and joined him and Laurie for dinner at Gennaro’s, the delightful restaurant at Hotel La Palma. The restaurant’s inviting ambiance, marked by its creamy hues and delicious cuisine, offered the authentic taste of Italy.

During our meal, consisting of the island’s veal with tuna sauce and roasted calamari, I asked Paul if there were any other filming locations he dreams of exploring. “Venice, Sydney, Japan, Hong Kong, or perhaps even outer space,” he joked.

With his ambition, who knows what he might achieve next? Paul Feig certainly knows how to aim high.
